Welcome to middle school!  The middle school program in Knox County Schools consists of grades 6-8 and serves as the transitional bridge between elementary and high school.  In middle school, the unique needs of young adolescents are nurtured in an instructional environment that promotes academic excellence, career exploration, personal achievement, and positive peer and adult relationships.

Through the use of teaming, groups of students are scheduled with an interdisciplinary team of teachers to support the seamless delivery of instruction in the core academic areas and to foster a sense of community and belonging.  Students move outside of their team for elective course offerings that provide a range of exploratory opportunities for students to develop their own talents and skills.

Middle School Resources:
AVID targets students in the academic middle –students with a 2.0 to 3.5 Grade Point Average- who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. AVID is a regularly scheduled elective class which meets during the school day empowering students to achieve academic excellence. (Learn More)

Curriculum Goals:

We want your child to excel in learning as he or she progresses through our school system. A strong partnership between dedicated education professionals and informed parents is needed to achieve this goal. This "Steps to Learning" site is designed to help you better understand what your child will learn. It also can serve as a tool for communicating with your child's teacher throughout the year.

Establishing clear grade-level learning targets in each subject is important. It ensures that all teachers instruct the same skills and concepts. Through assessment of these targets, your child's teacher can determine his or her progress and performance level.

You are encouraged to become familiar with the contents of this site and refer to it throughout the year. Use it as a basis for discussion about your child's progress. Compare these targets with the work your child brings home to see if he or she is "on target."

Our children are our future, and with your help, we are certain to reach our target: academic success for every child.

"Steps to Learning Success" outlines the elementary curriculum in nine content areas:

  • Health
  • Mathematics
  • Langauage Arts
  • Physical Education
  • Reading
  • Science
  • Music
  • Social Studies
  • Art

Knox County Schools 6th and 9th Grade Orientations

Knox County Schools host 6th, 9th grade orientations

The Knox County Schools will be hosting student orientations for rising sixth and ninth graders on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 to help transition those students into middle and high school.  Orientations will be held from 8:30 a.m. until noon at all middle and high schools where the students are based.  Bus service will be provided.

Transitioning grade students will have the opportunity to become familiar with, and acclimated to, their new school environment while being in a small group setting prior to the return of the entire student body.

“We understand that entering a new school environment can be challenging for students, especially at the transitional grades,” said Ed Hedgepeth, Executive Director of Secondary Education.  “Our goal is to help ease any apprehension that transitional grade students may have by providing as much information as possible before the official start of school.”

Students officially return to the Knox County Schools on Monday, Aug. 15, which is a half-day session.
